BMC seeking a new Chair of the Board (voluntary position)

Posted by Lucy Valerio on 05/08/2021

To take the BMC forward following a period of transition, the BMC is now inviting applications for a new Chair of the Board during an exciting period of organisational development and governance modernisation.

Applicants may have derived some of their relevant experience through involvement with our partner organisations.

This position will appeal to those who recognise the well-being benefits of active participation in outdoor activities and who share our care and concern for the natural environment. It provides an opportunity to gain satisfaction from contributing to decision-making and scrutiny at a time when the BMC is seeking to grow its membership and enhance its services whilst championing the environment in the context of increased outdoor participation. Involvement at a time when competition climbing features as a new Olympic sport provides a further exciting context to the role. For further information download the role description here.

The Board provides strategic direction, supports operational management and helps promote our activities across England and Wales. The successful candidate will provide leadership to the Board and guidance, support and mentorship to the CEO. They will also be pivotal in creating the conditions for overall Board and Director effectiveness and analyse plans and strategic options in a constructive way and help lead the future development of the BMC.

You can find out more about the current Board here.

We have five core values: community, adventure, sustainability, aspiration and respect. Within the latter, we celebrate the rich variety of British climbing, hill walking and mountaineering, build inclusive relationships and respect each other. In line with this we are keen to achieve a more diverse Board and we encourage applications from under-represented groups, in particular people from ethnic minorities, people with disabilities and women.

To apply for this position please send the following items to our Company Secretary, Lucy Valerio, at

  1. A one page covering letter explaining your interest in the role; and
  2. An up-to-date CV with details of two referees.

If you wish to speak to the current Chair prior to applying you can contact Paul Drew on

The closing date for applications is midnight Sunday 5 September 2021.

Shortlisting interviews will take place over the phone the week commencing 13 September 2021.

All applicants who meet the criteria and pass the shortlisting interview will then meet with a stakeholder panel the week commencing 20 September. This will be done virtually.

All applicants will then be invited to a face to face interview with a panel, and to meet the CEO, at the BMC’s office in Manchester on Tuesday 5 October 2021.  This is to provide candidates with the opportunity to see the BMC.
