Chair – BMC International Committee

Duration: Initial term to 1st September 2025 then subject to review

Remuneration: Voluntary position – travel and accommodation expenses only

Location: Pre-Covid meetings of the International Committee were held at the BMC offices in Manchester.  Meetings during Covid have been held online. Currently the committee still continues to meet online although this could be moved to a hybrid model.

It is an exciting time for international work within the BMC with much going on to define and implement the new international strategy and to reintroduce the seminars and Expedition hub.

The International Committee was set up in 1973 and was first chaired by Alan Blackshaw.  Since then it has awarded and administered the BMC expedition grants, overseen BMC International Meets, lobbied foreign governments, and navigated the complex paths of global climbing and mountaineering politics.

As International Committee Chair you will be at the head of an expert specialist committee, which reports to the Board and advises the BMC on international matters throughout the organisation. The successful candidate will have an important role in a review of the committee and the implementation of a new International Strategy. They will also be required to attend International Strategy Group meetings (4 per year).

The International Committee Chair or their nominee has observer status on the Members’ Council (Council) and attendance at mountaineering focused Council meetings, organised by the Nationally Elected Councillor for mountaineering, is an essential part of the role. Additionally, the International Committee Chair is strongly encouraged to attend as many Council meetings as practical to ensure that the international voice and perspective is heard when discussing our wider sport.

If you are a BMC member with a passion for mountains and international affairs and issues, we would love to hear from you.
