BMC Expedition guidance 2021

Posted by Nick Colton on 15/06/2021

Thinking of going abroad this year for that expedition of a lifetime but aren’t sure whether to go or not? The BMC has produced some brief points that will help guide your choices.

BMC Guidance for those who wish to travel aboard for climbing or mountaineering expeditions is that the following three conditions should apply:

  • FCO and WHO advice allows leisure travel to the destination country
  • That the destination country´s borders are fully open to tourists and internal travel restrictions have been lifted
  • That the trip or expedition is fully and properly insured with a suitable insurance policy from a recognised insurer.

Additionally, expeditions should only go ahead once the current COVID situation has resolved, any risk of re-infection of members or communities has gone, and a level of normality has been re-established.

For further considerations please also see this UIAA paper

We want to say a big thanks to every BMC member who continues to support us through the Coronavirus crisis.

From weekly Facebook Lives and GB Climbing home training videos, to our access team working to re-open the crags and fight for your mountain access, we couldn’t do it without you.

Did you know that we've launched a U27 membership offer for just £1.50 / month? And with full membership from £2.50 / month, it's never been easier to join and support our work:
