ACT now: be a part of the BMC's conservation charity

Posted by Catherine Flitcroft on 19/09/2018

The BMC Access & Conservation Trust (ACT) is looking to recruit new Trustees. This opens up an exciting opportunity for individuals to get involved with the BMC's charity.

ACT funds projects to protect our cliffs and mountains by facilitating education and conservation projects across the United Kingdom. In particular, ACT funding supports a wide range of projects encompassing policy-related work, literature production and large-scale environmental projects.

In recent years money has been donated to footpath restoration work (for example through Fix the Fells), a number of climbing Green Guides, the Avon Gorge Climbing project and more recently, a Winter Climbing Information Service monitoring ground and air temperatures in Cwm Idwal, Wales. This year ACT has focused its attention on kick starting the BMC’s campaign Mend Our Mountains: Make One Million and is supporting this as it progresses towards its £1 million target.

Visit the ACT webpage for the full list of the projects we have helped fund in the last 12 years and the Mend Our Mountains webpage.

ACT has been funding mountain based projects for over 15 years, yet it is not widely recognised as the BMC’s charity.  We are looking to improve the effectiveness and raise awareness of the charity.

Becoming a trustee provides an opportunity to apply the skills and experience you have gained to a totally new area of work.  Whether you are working or retired, we are looking for individuals to volunteer a small amount of time (4 to 6 meetings a year at our office in Manchester and  email correspondence) to help drive the charity, develop a clear future vision, approve funding applications, and search for new avenues of money as well as potential environmental projects to support.

This is a voluntary position; travel and accommodation expenses are payable.  Candidates do not need to be a member of the BMC at the time of application but an interest in climbing or hill walking would be useful.

Professional background / expertise we are looking for:

We are keen to hear from people with experience in the following areas:

·         Marketing communication

·         Fundraising

What we can offer:

An opportunity to apply your skills as part of a growing charity offering valuable opportunities to beneficiaries and the chance to make a real difference to the conservation of our climbing, walking and mountaineering environment.

The duties of a trustee:

1. To ensure that the organisation complies with its governing document, charity law, company law and any other relevant legislation or regulations. This includes ensuring the charity;

·         has the money it needs

·         spends its money sensibly, on the activities it was raised for

·         follows the law, including preparing reports and accounts to send to the Charity Commission;

2. To contribute actively to the board of trustees’ role in giving strategic direction to the Trust, setting targets and evaluating performance against agreed targets;

3. To ensure the effective and efficient administration of the Trust and represent the Trust at events.

How to Apply

If you are interested in contributing your time and skills to the Access & Conservation Trust, please send a CV and one page cover letter detailing your interest in the role to Dr. Catherine Flitcroft, the Charity Co-ordinator by email cath@thebmc.co.uk

Deadline for submitting applications is 9.00am, Monday 8 October 2018
