Black Diamond have issued a recall for inspection for a number of products including Camalots, and have also announced a major quality audit of their production facilities and systems.

Following on from their previous recall of slings and karabiners, Black Diamond have now issued a further recall including Camalots, Ascenders and Via Ferrata sets. In addition, they have announced a comprehensive quality audit of their production factory in Salt Lake City.

What is being recalled?

Previous recalls were for karabiners and nylon slings and these are ongoing. The additional new recalls are for Camalots and Camalot Ultralights, Index Ascenders and Easy Rider & Iron Cruiser Via Ferrata sets.

What should you do?

Check that any Black Diamond gear that you use or own is not covered under the recall. Any that is, stop using it, and follow Black Diamonds instructions on how to check for problems and how to return any affected units. Also tell your friends and climbing partners about this in case they have missed the recall announcements and use this gear themselves.

Whats the reason for the recall?

Problems with the quality control process seem to have occured after Black Diamond moved production of some products back from China to Salt Lake City in the US. A very small number of incorrectly manufactured items have been found, and so far, nobody has been hurt or injured as a result.

What have BD got to say about the recall?

Black Diamond have announced a full audit of the facilities at Salt Lake City where these problems seem to have originated. You can read their statement which includes links to the specific recalls for different products here.
