The slate quarries of north-west Wales have just been nominated for UNESCO World Heritage Site status. Once, slate carved from here was sent all around the world, literally roofing the Industrial Revolution. Then the industry largely collapsed, leaving behind prescient apocalyptic wonderlands for outdoor-lovers to explore. The second-largest of these quarries, Dinorwig, has in particular become a climbers' paradise. But where did it all begin, and when did the climbers move in?

Very positive progress has been made on securing access to Dali's Hole at Dinorwig Slate Quarries. Following many months of conflict, altercations and access problems at this popular low grade slate venue, the BMC have undertaken lengthy and complicated negotiations to try to secure access to this venue.

Following the recent closure of the slate quarries for filming, and the revival in interest in climbing at the Llanberis slate quarries concerns have been raised by the owners, First Hydro regarding liability and safety issues at the Dinorwig slate quarry. This is a brief update of the current situation at the begining of October.

The public footpath leading through the slate quarries to Nant Peris will be closed from 29th June until mid-August to help with filming a remake of the epic film Clash of the Titans.
