Highcliffe Nab

Cleveland

Overlooking Guisborough the crag is principally north facing with a broken west face of softer sandstone. Belays at the top can be a problem.

Crag information
Climbing Area: North East Rock Type: Sandstone
Importance: Local CRoW Land: No
Ownership: Forestry Commission No. of Routes: 90
Within National Park: Yes Year Developed: 1930

The popular area of the crag offers a limited number of fine routes throughout the grades. Top-outs are steep and a narrow path forms the walk off and requires care. There are a few belay stakes and some rock anchors, preinspection could benefit first time visitors. The Nab is popular with walkers and locals, care should be taken with bags and gear left at the base. The north face extends above the plantation and although suffering from lack of traffic, there are a number of worthwhile routes available to those prepared to seek them out.

Parking and Approach

The two most regular approaches are :-

Steeply by bridleway / path from the housing estate below the crag.

From Hutton Village (NZ602137), following the forrestry road steeply for 400m uphill before turning sharp left and contouring on forest road for approximately 1km when the crag can be seen a short way above (NZ610138).

Group Advice

Belay anchors are not easily found and the walk off the main area requires considerable caution.

18.9.2018. There was a substantial rock fall from the top of "North West Route" as a second was topping out. Fortunately they were on a tight top rope and no-one was stood underneath otherwise there could have been serious consequences. The top block is even more undercut than previously. Take care on this othetwise excellent route.
