e-Newsletter September 2013
Welcome

It’s the most popular crag in Britain, and decisions are being made that could significantly change its management, so we're asking you to Stand up for Stanage by signing our petition calling on the Peak District National Park Authority to acknowledge and accept our Stanage Charter.

The summer isn’t over yet, and the first weekend of September is BMC festival weekend, with climbers gathering on the Gower Peninsula, the Culm Coast, and Northumberland’s Crag Lough – join us for a weekend of climbing and socialising.

The September round of BMC area meetings is currently taking place, so if you want to get involved in discussions on access, bolting, dry tooling, guidebooks and more, come along to your local meeting.

Four fun festivals from Cornwall to Northumberland
V Festival might think it’s clever holding its music festival in two locations over the same weekend, but BMC volunteers can top that, so we’re putting on three festivals in one September weekend, and adding another later in the month for good measure.

Hill skills: how to go lightweight camping
Lightweight camping always seems like a great idea – especially when slogging uphill strapped to a 90-litre monster. But packing light is a dark art – some mountaineers can squeeze all their gear for a multi-day mission into a day sack, whilst others almost need Sherpas for a single overnight camp. What can you do to lose a few pounds?
Friction blisters: prevention and treatment
Friction blisters on the feet are a common and potentially serious complication of mountaineering and other outdoor activities. Most people will experience blisters at some point in their pursuits and will adapt their socks, footwear and foot hygiene accordingly.

A new backpack-mounted camera which can be worn by walkers to capture images for Google Street View is being pioneered on Britain's canals. The Wales Coast Path could be next. Is our countryside about to get the Google treatment?
Clubs and communities benefit from Olympic legacy
Two BMC affiliated clubs have received over £90,000 of National Lottery funding from Sport England’s Inspired Facilities fund for the renovation and modernisation of local sports facilities.
Grassroots climbing websites; get the local lowdown
If you want the best recommendations, ask a local. Everybody knows that. Local knowledge is up to date, clued in, opinionated and enthusiastic. What more could you ask for? And the good news is that if you want this knowledge you needn't grub round at the base of an obscure crag or start buying pints for strangers in the ‘right’ pub any more.
