BMC launches Liftshare site

Posted by Catherine Flitcroft on 27/09/2021

With our BMC Community Liftshare site, we've now made it easier for climbers, hill walkers and mountaineers to get to the mountains and crags you love, now with less cars on the road. Get involved and sign up today.

The BMC Liftshare will help to reduce the number of cars on the road, reduce your own carbon footprint as well ease car park capacities at popular venues.

How it works

Why you should consider lift sharing

Help the environment

As climbers and hill walkers, we sure do love the outdoors. So let's have our actions reflect our passions too! By getting more into liftsharing and reducing the number of cars on the road, you will help reduce carbon emissions going into the atmosphere, improve air quality and ultimately do a little more on your part to engage in combatting the climate crisis.

Meet new people

Car sharing can be a great way to meet like-minded people. Whether you’re looking to car share to get to the crag, to get out to a National Park for a walk, get to a climbing competition or event, or just simply looking to improve the commute to work, this is a great way for you to get to know people.

Less traffic

Car sharing takes cars off the road, helping reduce air pollution and helping to reduce congestion (and therefore fewer traffic jams).

With fewer cars on the road, there will also be less need for road expansions, parking spaces as well as less demand for gas and oil.

It’s good for your health

By car sharing and asking others to do the same, you are changing behaviours and are more likely to use other modes of sustainable, public transport and active forms of transport (cycling and walking). Perhaps you don’t own a car or have regular use of a car and would love to explore further afield? More opportunities to get active and get outdoors could open up to you…

Spending more time as a passenger could help reduce your stress levels. Having someone else in the car with you whilst you're driving (or being driven) can also make a journey seem shorter and is much more pleasant.

According to Liftshare, if half of UK motorists received a lift one day a week, congestion and pollution would be reduced by 10%, traffic jams by 20% and could save you an average of £1000 per year!

How safe is car sharing?

When it comes to travelling, everyone is responsible for their own safety. However, Liftshare recommend some simple security measures:

  • Avoid exchanging home addresses with your travelling companion before you meet them
  • Arrange to meet in a public place
  • Inform a friend or family member of whom you will be travelling with, when and to where
  • Make sure you show each other your IDs - e.g. passports, or driving licences - so you know you're travelling with the right person
  • You are under no obligation to go ahead with any car share. If you have any doubts about your travelling companion, for any reason, you should avoid travelling with them.

Car sharing during coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic

Even after you have received the vaccine, you should continue to follow this guidance on how to travel safely:

  • You should wear face coverings in enclosed areas where you come into contact with people you do not usually meet.
  • Where possible open windows for ventilation when in the vehicle.
  • Sit as far away as each other as possible
  • Be aware of the surfaces you touch. Be careful not to touch your face.
  • Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or the inside of your elbow when coughing or sneezing.
  • Before and after your journey, wash your hands for at least 20 seconds or sanitise your hands as soon as possible.
  • Clean car surfaces after every journey (including seatbelts and internal/external handles)

Public health advice and guidance on travelling by car and sharing a car during the current coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic is available here.

For everything else you might want to know about lift sharing, Liftshare have put together a very useful list of frequently asked questions including a useful calculator to help work out the cost contribution per passenger for your journey.

I can't find the group on Liftshare.com when I search for BMC. Has it even be created? Thanks!

This doesn't work well. I can't set a future date for a planned journey (ClimbOut Fest in 2 weeks) and I can't set my destination as a random crag in the middle of nowhere or the actual location of the festival, an outdoor centre. Dear BMC, I don't think that using a website designed for commuters really works. Thanks Ian.
