Climbability: increasing inclusivity in climbing

Posted by James Mchaffie on 30/10/2019

The BMC and Adventure for All are running a pilot at Rock Over Climbing Centre looking to increase inclusivity in climbing activities. The aim of the pilot is to help to develop a package that will increase the confidence of both climbing walls and staff to run climbing sessions for people with a range of disabilities.

We will be running a Climbing for all workshop on Monday, 25 November, give training on inclusivity to Rockovers Technical Advisors on Tuesday, 26 and there will be a free open day for people with a range of disabilities on Friday, 29 November where the Climbing for all course skills can be put into practice.

Monday, 25

Climbing for all: The purpose of the course is to provide instructors and coaches increased confidence and skills to enable disabled people to experience and enjoy climbing. The course also provides you with an opportunity to test you instructing and coaching skills in new territories.

The course is delivered in two halves

1. Theory/Practical
  • Appropriate/Inappropriate Language
  • Types of Disabilities
  • How do Disabilities Occur
  • Models of Disability
  • Identifying and Tackling Barriers

2. The second half covers
  • Climbing Environments
  • Side Supported Climbing
  • Vertical Hoists
  • Wheelchair Abseiling

As well as Rockover staff there are six additional spaces on the course which cost £40 per person.
