The BMC Clubs' Committee is recruiting

Posted by Jane Thompson on 17/10/2018

The BMC Clubs’ Committee is looking for volunteers to represent clubs from local areas as existing members finish their term.

The Committee is one of several BMC specialist committees and it provides a forum for the discussion of all matters of concern to BMC affiliated clubs.  It supports affiliated clubs by advising on specific issues, organising training events, producing general guidance on all aspects of club governance, and championing the cause for clubs.

Local Area Clubs Representatives

There are vacancies for Local Area Clubs Reps on Clubs Comm to cover the following BMC Areas: North East; North West; Cymru North Wales; and, London & South East.

Therefore we are asking club members to consider standing for one of these positions, and we’re asking clubs in those areas to consider encouraging their members to stand for one of the positions.

Elections for these positions usually take place at the BMC Area AGMs; however an Area could appoint someone to the role as an interim position.  It is important that you either

  • contact your local Area Chair or Secretary, or
  • contact Jane Thompson who will introduce you to the local Area Chair

Volunteers should have some experience of club governance although they don’t need to be a current member of their own club committee.  Specific skills (such as legal, accounting, IT etc.) are useful but a willingness to contribute to meetings and to support projects is more important.  These roles are key for communicating issues from the clubs in the local BMC Areas through to the Clubs Committee and for communicating support, advice and information back to the local clubs.

What is the commitment?

Committee meetings are held four times a year; twice at the BMC offices in Manchester on Thursday evenings, and twice on a weekend for a longer meeting (usually in or near the mountainous areas of England and Wales).  Video conferencing is available at most meetings for those members unable to attend in person.  Travel expenses are reimbursed and food is provided at the meeting.  Overnight accommodation is provided as required.

Attendance at engagement sessions with clubs (such as Seminars or Roadshows) is occasionally requested.

Work takes place in-between meetings to further progress our objectives.

Next steps

For the Local Area Clubs Rep roles – members should let their local Area Chair or Secretary know of their interest.

If you have any questions about the positions please contact:
