Young British Alpinists session in North Wales

Posted by Jane Thompson on 26/06/2017

Are you a young, keen British alpinist? The BMC and The Alpine Club have teamed up to launch a new process to help talented British alpine climbers improve their skills and knowledge about expedition climbing.

As part of this process an evening meeting will be held at The Beacon Climbing Centre in North Wales on Saturday 15 July. All young, keen British alpinists are invited.

The meeting will include talks from some of Britain's most experienced expedition alpine climbers, who will be discussing previous trips and sharing their knowledge of different potential areas for future expeditions. There should also be the chance to make plans to get out and climb or walk with other attendees on the Sunday.

Event details

When:
5pm, Saturday 15 July (we should be finished by 9pm)

Where:
The Beacon Climbing Centre, Cibyn Estate, Caernarfon, LL55 2BD (Tel: 01286 677 322)

Who for:
Experienced, keen British alpinists under 35 years old. This is not an introductory programme for alpine climbing, but targeted at those who already have significant experience in Scottish winter climbing, summer and winter alpinism and perhaps expeditions. You don't need to be jogging up North Faces or climbing Scottish grade VIII to come along, just to be actively climbing in the mountains and be excited about expedition alpine climbing. If this sounds like you then please come along!

Plan:
Main meeting

  • Report on the recent British-Slovenian Exchange
  • Report back on discussions by BMC International Committee and offers of support from the Alpine Club
  • Proposal to form 'formal group-club' similar to the Alpine Climbing Group affiliated to the Alpine Club
  • Agree entry requirements for members
  • If agreed choose an organising committee from young alpinists
  • Agree a calendar of events, training and future meetings
  • Discussion of super trip, information database, and further international exchanges

Break for food in the café

7pm: Illustrated lectures

  • John Porter: Bandaka & Changabang and the ACG in 70s
  • Ian Parnell: Greenland possibilities
  • Ben Silvestre: Alaska, The Revelations and The Infinite Spur on Mount Foraker
  • Pat Littlejohn: Explorations in the Tien Shen
