Four GB team climbers make EYC finals

It was a great performance from the GB Junior Climbing Team at the European Youth Championships (EYC) in Imst, Austria, where four members made finals and achieved top 10 positions at this annual event. Two of the new faces joining this strong team instantly made their mark on the international circuit by qualifying for the final.

Emily Phillips and Hamish McArthur made a promising start to their GB Climbing Team careers by finishing an impressive 5th and 9th place, respectively, in the Youth B category (14 to 15-year-olds) at the international event. There will surely be more to come from this pair in the future.

Meanwhile, Molly Thompson-Smith and William Bosi used their wealth of experience to also make finals, taking 7th and 10th places, respectively. Whereas Jim Pope and Kitty Morrison put in highly respectable performances, only just missing out on finals in 13th position.

Ian Dunn, team manager, said: "We had a great competition at Imst EYC, unfortunately the only lead EYC in 2016. We took a strong team but included a few new faces too, the youngsters in their first year of Youth B, Emily Phillips and Hamish McArthur, both made the finals (top 10). They were joined by seasoned competitors Molly Thompson Smith and William Bosi. If we had had a wee bit more luck, Kitty Morrison and Jim Pope both 13th would have also been off to isolation too.

"In the end, Emily finished 9th, William 10th, Molly 7th, but star of the show Hamish finished 5th in his first European Cup. With plenty to learn, both Emily and Hamish are talents to watch. Overall we returned home a very happy team that is a pleasure to take to Internationals as they are well behaved and do their parents and country proud.”

The team now looks towards the World Youth Championships in China, which is scheduled to take place in November, giving them plenty of time to put in hard work and training.
