Several upcoming regional BMC meetings are going big on hill walking, including talks from ‘Scafell Pike’ filmmaker Terry Abraham, long-distance walker Chris Townsend, and BMC CEO Dave Turnbull. See what’s happening near you.

As part of the BMC’s ongoing efforts to improve its work for hill walkers, several of our upcoming Area Meetings will be dedicated to hill walking.

The Peak Area will be hosting a talk by Terry Abraham, whose ‘Life of a Mountain: A Year on Scafell Pike’ broke viewing records when it was recently shown on BBC Four, reeling in nearly a million viewers in its first screening alone.

In Yorkshire, the next two BMC meetings will both have a hill walking theme, with BMC CEO Dave Turnbull and hill walking officer Carey Davies giving a talk in April, followed in June by a talk from renowned long-distance walker and BMC ambassador Chris Townsend.

Dave Turnbull and Carey Davies will also be present at the April meeting of the Lake District Area.

Here’s a full breakdown of what’s happening where:

  • Peak Area Meeting, Wednesday April 15

7.30pm, The Maynard, Grindleford

A presentation from award-winning filmmaker Terry Abraham, plus Dave Turnbull and Carey Davies giving a talk on making the BMC the ‘natural home for hill walkers’.

  • Yorkshire Area Meeting, Monday April 20, Ben Rhydding

What are BMC Area Meetings?

Area meetings are the base from which the BMC grows. It’s where local action starts and ideas get kicked about - in a friendly way, of course. One of their purposes is to inform local climbers and walkers about regional and national issues. They also act as a forum for local opinions on matters such as crag access, conservation issues, and national debates such as wind farms, land use and road building schemes.

The BMC is divided into ten areas, eight in England and two in Wales. These are: Lake District; London & South East; Midlands; North East; North West; Peak District; South West; Yorkshire; Cymru North Wales; and Cymru South Wales; a Cymru Mid Wales outreach group also holds meetings. Each BMC Area elects two representatives to sit on the BMC National Council. Area meetings take place four times a year.
