As an alternative to spending Easter Sunday eating chocolate, why not enter the 2013 British Ski Mountaineering Championships.

The race takes place on Sunday 31 March near Grenoble in France on the race course - the Belle Etoile.  The course includes 1900 metres of vertical height gain, technical ridge sections with via ferrata kit and challenging but not extreme off piste descents.

This is the second British Champship race following on from last year's successful race in Chamonix. Check out the fun to be had by watching last year's race

British Ski Mountaineering team member Jon Morgan said: "This is definitiely NOT an elite only competition and it would be great to see plenty of grass roots ski mountaineering enthusiasts turning out for a great day out. The emphasis is very much on participation and fun. Sure it is a competition but it isn't taken too seriously, honest!"

Entry is only €28, which includes post race grub.  You can enter online at http://www.team-montagne.com/belle-etoile.php

Why is there so much emphasis on competitions in the BMC approach to mountaineering and climbing?
Many ski mountaineers regard this type of competition as a complete irrelevance to the real business of having magic days with a few mates in remote winter mountains.
