What’s New

Over The Moors
is the new BMC definitive guide to climbing on the moorland gritstone of the Peak District; bringing the same superb quality established by recent BMC guidebooks to the crags of the wild upland moors of  Kinder, Bleaklow, Chew and Marsden. The recently developed Fairy Cave Quarry has rapidly gained popularity, and is now Somerset’s Mecca for 'trad' slab climbing. These slabs, which reach a height of 40 metres, provide excellent, solid climbing, free from pegs and other fixed gear. South West Climbs: Volume 1 covers some of the superb climbing on the south-west peninsula of England, including Avon and Cheddar Gorges, Wye Valley and Dorset. Wye Valley Supplement 2012 attempts to pull together all developments since the publication of the three definitive guides to the Wye Valley area starting back in 2007. Four new crags: Mounton Valley Rocks, near Chepstow; Plumweir Cliff above Shorn Cliff, and Bailey Quarry and the Celestial Walls near Symonds Yat are also included.

From the Dark Peak of Derbyshire to the misty Malverns in Worcestershire and Milk Hill on the Mid-Wilts Way, Walking the County High Points of England provides the perfect opportunity for ramblers to experience the English countryside. Exmoor & North Devon Coast Path covers the first section of the South West Coast Path, from Minehead to Bude. This practical guide includes over 50 large scale (1:20,000) maps, and information on accommodation guide, dining and public transport information. With dramatic mountain ridges towering over the moorland of its northern half, and a lusher, softer landscape in the south, Arran is often dubbed as Scotland in Miniature; Arran: 40 Favourite Walks contains a selection of the best walks on the island. Ramble On is both a biography of Britain's favourite outdoor pursuit and a celebration of our wonderful countryside. It tells story of how country walks and rambling were transformed from a small and often illegal pastime to the most popular recreational activity in the country.

Chamonix Mountain Adventures is a handy guidebook to mountain activities based in Chamonix in the French Alps. There are selections of graded routes described for walking, trekking, mountaineering, mountain biking, road cycling, via ferratas, rock climbing and bouldering, with clear advice for novices for each activity. Ferrate a Cortina describes 24 via ferrata routes in the Cortina area of the Italian Dolomites, accompanied by full photographs and topos; text in English, German and Italian.

5+6 Fontainebleau takes the same format as the well known '7 + 8' book, and gives a complete and clear overview of the medium to difficult boulder problems of Fontainebleau; printed in full colour and describing almost 4,000 problems from 5- up to 6c+. Schweiz Plaisir Selection is a selected guidebook to some of the best rock routes in the Alps. Areas covered include: Dauphine; Haute Savoie; Valle d'Aosta; Bernese Oberland; Central and NE Switzerland: Tessin; and Bergell. Text in English, French and German, with drawn topos. Also from the same publisher is a brand new edition of Schweiz Plaisir West which covers climbs in five areas of the west side of Switzerland: Haute-Savoie; Bas Valais-Vaud; Oberwallis; Gastlosen-Frutigland; and Interlaken-Grimsel. The Oberwallis is one of the most important climbing and mountaineering areas in Switzerland - also known as Valais East or Upper Valais. The guidebook contains close to 2,000 rock climbs in 99 climbing areas. The guidebook is very comprehensive with sectors for families and beginners ranging up to committed alpine routes for experienced climbers. A revised and updated edition of Slovenia Sport Climbs describes more than 4,000 routes at over 90 crags. A summary of each climbing area is combined with route topo drawings; text in Slovak, Italian, German and English.

Mountain Bike in Val di Fassa describes 18 mountain bike routes in the heart of the Dolomites; English text with easy to follow maps and colour photographs.

The Medium Nepal Country Route Planner is a 1:850,000 overview map of Nepal covering the Great Himalaya Trail and National Parks, with towns, roads and rivers shown. It’s a very handy sized map, containing lots of information, and is the perfect planning tool for any trip to Nepal.

Straight Up: Himalayan Tales of the Unexpected is a collection of stories by Steve Berry, recounting his early expeditions to the Himalaya prior to 1987, including encounters with bears, escapes from avalanches, summit successes and failures, love stories, mystical connections, and grapples with bureaucracy.

Surrounding the Lake District are the crags of the Eden Valley & South Lakes Limestone. A major attraction of the limestone and sandstone crags and quarries described in this guide is that their climbs may often remain dry when those in the National Park are not. Important crags described include Chapel Head Scar and Armathwaite, but numerous lesser known crags also give plenty of scope within easy reach of the Lakes, ideal venues to save a wet day or as evening crags for locals.

The latest addition to the new series of Pembroke climbing guidebooks, Stackpole and Lydstep describes more than 1,100 routes over a fifteen mile stretch of the coastline. The area boasts three major, world class, climbing areas; Mowingword, Stackpole Head and Mother Carey's Kitchen. With 440 pages of text, full colour photodiagrams, action shots and line plans you won’t have any excuse for getting lost or not being enthused.

Written by one of the best known navigation instructors in the UK, Navigation in the Mountains is the definitive and comprehensive ‘how to navigate textbook’. It covers every aspect of mountain navigation; summer, winter and overseas, using traditional map and compass as well as devices such as GPS and digital software applications. The official navigation book for all mountain training schemes.

White Peak is the latest map in the award-winning British Mountain Map series. Printed on polyethylene - durable, tear-resistant and waterproof. The 1:40,000 scale provides clear, detailed information, showing all the features required for accurate navigation.

Walking Cheshire’s Sandstone Trail is a guide to probably the most popular middle distance walk in Northwest England - the trail runs for 55km along Cheshire's central sandstone ridge between Frodsham and Whitchurch; with easy-to-follow route descriptions (in both directions), large scale OS mapping, and details of interesting sights to see on the way.

Everest & Gokyo is a detailed 1:60,000 scale map of the Everest region including the Cho La and Renjo passes. The map has a grid lines with reference numbers and a detailed English key sheet. 1:4,000 scale maps of Namche Bazar and Lukla, showing roads and local amenities, are included. Time taken and height gained from place to place are also shown.
