Clubs get cash boost

Posted by Tina Gardner on 03/08/2009

The BMC has allocated Sport England funding to a number of BMC affiliated clubs to help them develop websites and newsletters, buy new equipment, and provide training and instruction to enable them to welcome novices.

This is the first year this funding has been available, thanks to the BMC’s successful bid to Sport England for four years of funding to help support BMC affiliated clubs. As the BMC has over 300 affiliated clubs, applications for the funding were oversubscribed and unfortunately not all those clubs who submitted an application have been able to benefit this year. However they can re-apply next year.

The following money has been awarded to a variety of BMC affiliated clubs and student clubs. Some clubs applied for, and have received, financial support in more than one category.

  • £7000 has been allocated between 35 clubs to enable them to improve the quality of existing club websites or newsletters or to develop new websites or newsletters. This funding is intended to contribute towards external costs incurred by clubs in improving communications amongst members.

  • £8500 has been divided amongst 37 clubs to purchase specified mountaineering equipment to assist them in taking on and supporting novices and young members who may not yet possess all of the mountaineering equipment they need.

  • £7500 has been split between 35 clubs to enable clubs to employ professional instructors to provide training to novice members. This aims to enable new members to achieve basic climbing or hill walking skills and so support the club in being able to welcome novices.

Nick Colton, BMC Deputy CEO said: "We are delighted that the BMC is able to support clubs in this way. We look forward to hearing feedback on how the funding is benefiting the clubs and their members."
