Mountaineer George Band has been awarded the OBE for services to mountaineering and charity.
In 1953 Band was the youngest member of the successful Everest expedition which put Hillary and Tenzing on the summit. Two years later, with Joe Brown, he made the first ascent of Kangchenjunga (8586m), the world’s third highest mountain. He was the BMC President from 1996 to 1999, and has also been President of the Alpine Club, Chairman of the Mount Everest Foundation, and on the Council of the Royal Geographical Society. He is Chairman of the the Himalayan Trust UK.
Also recognised in the Queen's New Year Honours list are two mountain rescue volunteers. Dr Albert Roy Cooksey has been awarded an MBE for voluntary service to the Coniston Mountain Rescue Team in the Lake District. Barry David Gregory has been awarded an MBE for voluntary service to the Woodhead Mountain Rescue Team in the Peak District.
