Sandy Allan recounts one of the greatest mountaineering achievements of modern times, the first ascent of Nanga Parbat’s Mazeno Ridge, at the Heaton Moor Sports Club on Tuesday 8 December.
On 15 July 2012, Sandy Allen and Rick Allen reached the summit of Nanga Parbat, making the much-coveted and first complete ascent of the mountain’s Mazeno Ridge. It is a totally committing venture, and had thwarted attempts since the 1970s.
Mazeno is the longest arête on an 8,000m peak; a staggering 13km from the Mazeno Pass at 5,377m to where it joins the Schell Route and then another two kilometres up this (via slopes on the Diamir Flank) to the summit.
