Be the first to catch Doug Scott’s new lecture when it debuts in Norwich on Thursday 9 July, and help raise funds for Cavell Nurses’ Trust and Community Action Nepal.

At sunset on 24 September 1975, Doug Scott and Dougal Haston reached the summit of Everest, having made the first ascent of its South West Face and becoming the first Britons to climb Everest.

It was now 19.00 hours, too late to descent to the safety of their camp. Digging a snow hole just 100 metres below the 29,029 ft. summit, they prepared for an extreme night without sleeping bags or oxygen and with no certainty of the outcome. Exhausted through lack of oxygen and intense cold, their survival of the world’s highest ever bivouac is a story etched into the annals of mountaineering history and one that shaped the future of high altitude mountaineering for ever.

In his lecture Doug will tell of this game-changing climb on Everest and of his subsequent climbs on the world’s other highest peaks, K2 and Kangchenjunga, which were undertaken in lightweight “alpine style” searching out new unclimbed routes. With just a few climbers and minimal supporting Sherpas and mountain porters, Doug was a pioneer of this new lightweight Himalayan climbing philosophy.

Following the lecture there will be an auction of framed photographic prints by Bonington, Messner, Habeler, Scott and other mountaineering legends.

Tickets: £15 each (£10 concession)
