The BMC will be running a youth climbing meet in South Devon and Dartmoor from the 28-31 August. There will be opportunities to do some trad, sport and bouldering over the 3 day meet. DMM are supporting the meet.

Organised for young climbers (11 to 17-year-olds) wanting to make the step from indoor walls to getting outside onto the crags, as well as those who already have some outdoor climbing experience, it is a great opportunity to enjoy some classic trad routes under the watchful eye of experienced climbers.

The meet will be based at the Whiteworks residential facility in the heart of Dartmoor. Young people can arrive between 19.30 and 21.30 on the Tuesday evening. Climbing will take place at venues like Ansteys Cove, Torbryan, Sheeps Tor and the Dewerstone on the Wednesday, Thursday and Friday with the meet ending and young people departing at 16.00 on Friday 31 August.

An evening meal will be provided for the Wednesday and Thursday evenings and a climbing lecture given one night. Young people will require their own breakfast and lunches for the 3 days.

Overseen by the BMC’s youth and partnerships officer, James McHaffie & Climb Cornwall director Jay Jackson, young climbers with suitable basic knowledge through to more experienced climbers can apply to join the meet.

A group of volunteers who are experienced climbers will be gathered (minimum of five years climbing experience), who are known to the organisers and have been DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) checked (BMC do this free for volunteers). These experienced climbers will take the youngsters out onto the crags after taking account of their ability, aspirations and the weather.

The meet will only cost £20 for the whole thing as it's supported by volunteers and DMM.

Please email parental consents to James McHaffie. If you would like to volunteer at the event please get in touch: james@thebmc.co.uk
