The venues for the 2017 BMC Youth Climbing Series have been finalised and you can now enter online for the series.

The BMC YCS has been expanding at a rapid rate for the last couple of years with 900 young climbers entering in 2016. Will we reach 1000 in 2017?

RESULTS FOR THE WHOLE SERIES CAN BE SEEN HERE

The deadline for entries is 12pm on the Wednesday before each round. Please note that entries submitted after that, and entries on the day, will not be accepted.

The cost of entry is:

1 round - BMC members: £14, non-members: £22 and those on income support: £8

2 rounds - BMC members: £24, non-members: £38 and those on income support: £14

3 rounds - BMC members: £32, non-members: £56 and those on income support: £20

It is much cheaper to enter the YCS if you are a member of the BMC, if you enter all three rounds the cost of your membership is recouped in just your entry fee alone, then you have all the other great benefits of being a BMC member - want to join - click here

Non-member and Income Support entry include 3 months membership of the BMC which automatically includes free Combined Liability and Personal Accident insurance for all events.

Each round starts at 0930 with registration and climbing starts at around 1000, with each round normally concluding by approx. 1600 - this is totally dependent on the number of entrants in each round and the size of the venue.

Reminder of how London & SE Area split works.

The London & SE Area is split north to south along the line of the M4/Thames river unless you have an RG (Reading post code).

London & SE - North area - all those competitors living north of the M4/Thames river or living in an area with an RG postcode will compete in this area.

London & SE - South area - all those competitors living south of the M4/Thames river that don't have an RG postcode will compete in this area.

Speed Climbing at the YCS
Now that climbing will be part of the Olympic Games in 2020, we wish to involve speed climbing in some form in the Youth Climbing Series. However due to the time and logistical constraints of the regional events and the national final, we don't feel that we can introduce a full speed climbing competition element to the YCS in its current format.

Therefore we plan to run an (non-compulsory) speed climbing competition on the Sunday of the National Final weekend at EICA, Ratho. In addition certain Area Youth Coordinators may decide to run come and try it speed climbing sessions at the regional rounds if the facilities, timings and logistics allow, but this is not compulsory and will not count towards the final rankings.

After the National Final in 2017 the AYC's will meet to discuss the future format of the series and look at how we can introduce speed climbing into the competition for the future.

Parental Consent Form
To take part, the parent/guardian of a each competitor must complete a parental consent form. Consent forms can be returned to the BMC office before the date of the event - please mark FAO Amii Wilkes or bring them with you on the day of the event.

RESULTS FOR THE WHOLE SERIES CAN BE SEEN HERE

There are five categories, with separate girls and boys competitions, that follow the IFSC (International Federation of Sport Climbing) system based on year of birth. The categories are called Youth A, B, C, D and E.

In 2017 these are:

Youth A - those born in 2000 & 2001
Youth B – those born in 2002 & 2003
Youth C – those born in 2004 & 2005
Youth D – those born in 2006 & 2007
Youth E - those born in 2008 & 2009

Answer to question 4 - The hoodies are generally organised by the AYC for the national finalists after they have been identified at the end of round 3.

Answer to question 5 - it is difficult to predict the end time of any of the categories when we dont know what the final numbers of entrants will be, but the regional rounds are generally finished by about 4/5pm.

The rules will remain the same as it was for the GB Team in previous years - Youth C Development Squad members will be able to do the YCS, but not Youth A & B.

Will the grades reflect true grades on rock or some watered down soft grading system that seems to have become prevalent in climbing walls these days?

My experience of these competitions is that the 'walls' can't be bothered to set properly and there are confusing combinations of colours (of holds) within close proximity and this leads to the disqualification of competitors who, for example, put their foot on an illegal hold. This setting clearly favours the local kids. Also, be warned that the real competition is between the parents and not the overly pushed kids who are supposed to be enjoying themselves.

As a parent of a child involved in the YCS since 2009, I would recommend this comp to anyone. Yes your child will need to learn the rules - which include not making use of other colour holds or being coached up climbs but this is straightforward.
Each region has the competition hosted across 3 different walls which ensures that familiarity with a wall or routesetter is not the over-riding factor in who does well. Indeed being at a 'home wall' can sometimes be trickier as the children put a bit of extra pressure on themselves.
For the most part, the competition is fun and friendly. My child has long standing friends made over many years of competing both from our region and other regions across the country. How many other sports do you see the kids cheering each other on and sharing beta with each other even at the very top level?
If you are going for the first time, encourage your child to see it as a chance to enjoy climbing with some new friends. They will hopefully encourage each other and have fun. There is always another day if things don't go to plan.
Finally remember every single person involved in organising the day is a volunteer. Consider volunteering yourself as judge or belayer - the AYC will give a full briefing if you are new to the role. There are lots of us around who are experienced in these roles if you just fancy working alongside someone to gain confidence.

You need to see what the problem is. Some people get a green tick and can access the results and others get a red cross and cannot. Surely, you must have lookeed at this problem.

No - as no one had pointed out what the problem was i could really have looked at this - the results are definitely there and always there when I have been looking at them. For those who are still struggling to see the results try refreshing your browser as you might have an old version of the page cached.

If you go to comment 31 posted by P S Cooper and substitute sw for nw in the address provided in your search engine it will take you to the results. Clearly there is a glitch in the software. The SW results are green ticked and present on my machine but the NW results are red crossed and not there.

Apologies for the lack of SW results we had some technical issues with them that had to be sorted and we are now waiting for our chief scorer to post them, however he is a volunteer and teaches a full schedule during the day so we hope to get the results posted as soon as possible- please have some patience.

Is there a good reason that the results are so late. Since nothing can change after the competition, the results must have been known on Saturday and some of the groups did finish quite early so it shouldn't be too much to ask to get them online. maybe there is some tweaking going on as 'technical issues' are fine and an 'overworked volunteer' is fine - but why both excuses together? I am not convinced!

Hey Rob,

I appreciate that the competition is highly dependent on volunteers. I and many other adults volunteer at each round of the competition to ensure that the events are able to run. Please can you explain the reason for the continued delay?

This is the flagship competition for engaging young athletes in this sport. We have a bouldering World Champion, climbing is getting increased global recognition. This just feels distinctly amateur to me.

Surely in 2018 a better way of communicating these results to competitors has to be found rather than relying on parents to constantly refresh a page on a school website?
