Roll up! Roll up! Camping and climbing equipment worth over £2000, and £500 worth of other prizes, are up for grabs in the James Brownhill Memorial Fund Easter raffle!
The James Brownhill Memorial Fund (JBMF) was established in 2011 in memory of young mountaineer James Brownhill, following his death climbing the Frendo Spur in July that year.
James was an avid climber and mountaineer. His love for climbing led him to develop skills in every climbing style but Alpine and traditional climbing were his true passions. His family established the fund to encourage and foster a higher level of safety, good practice and sustainability within university climbing clubs.
University club members can access subsidised Mountain Training courses at Plas y Brenin. In the last three years, twenty-five students have benefited, improving their own skills, and supporting their clubs.
University Club volunteers can apply for bursaries to undertake courses at Plas y Brenin to consolidate and develop their skills for teaching new club members. Find out more about the great work being undertaken in James' memory.
JBMF Easter Raffle
Perfect for club trips, the JBMF have been generously donated a Vango Lumen V500 Airbeam tent, plus sleeping bags, airbeds and a ground sheet worth over £1200. Plenty of space for five people, and even better, no poles! Instead some clever technology means you simply pump your tent up in a few minutes!
The climbing gear prizes are bundles of kit each worth over £300. One prize is an Edilrid via ferrata kit, and the other a 35m Sterling rope. PLUS, each prize includes: a training board, hald balm, Metolius chalk, chalk bag and bouldereing bucket, an Evolv beanie, climbing pants and a belay plate.
Other prizes include ladies & gents Berghaus jackets, a case of wine, £50 of supermarket vouchers, a lightweight junior goal & net, and in case you get rained off in the Peak District, two cases of Thornbridge beer and brewery tour tickets are up for grabs too.

Advance planning is the smart way to make your alpine dreams come true. Refresh your skills at a revamped BMC Alpine Skills Lecture this March. New speakers Calum Muskett and Steve Long will show you all things alpine with practical demos and audience participation.

The lectures are for both novice and experienced alpine climbers and will cover:

• Preparation, fitness and acclimatisation
• Valley accommodation, huts and bivis
• Alpine hazards and how to manage the risks
• The speed v backup spectrum: techniques for effective movement

Speakers
BMC Ambassador Calum Muskett is a 21 year old alpinist based in North Wales. He specialises in alpine rock climbing but also loves the colder adventures you can have mixed climbing in the Alps and further afield. Having gone through a trial and error learning process alpine climbing, Calum is keen to share his experiences to make sure that you don't make the same mistakes he did! Calum’s alpine adventures have taken him to the Mont Blanc Massif, Bernese Oberland, Dolomites, Ratikon, Torres del Paine and Fitzroy.
Steve Long is almost old enough to be Calum’s grandad. He is also based in Snowdonia and is Chair of the International Mountaineering Federation (UIAA) Training Standards. Steve has been mountaineering for over 30 years and has climbed in every continent and skied in most. He is an International Mountain Guide and works part time as the Development Officer for the Association of Mountaineering Instructors. Steve directed Conville Trust Alpine courses for several years and still teaches Alpine skills every year. Highlight ascents include the Dru in winter, Cerro Torre, Low’s Gully (Borneo), and an epic attempt on Great Trango.
