Rock vandalism in the Peak

Widespread and significant rock vandalism has been reported at Robin Hoods Stride and Cratcliffe Tor recently.

A large number of problems have been chipped at these two locations last week, as well as a previous occurance of chipping on Joe's Slab at Frogatt at the end of last year. The nature of the chipping means that it is unlikely to be climbers who are invovled as holds have not been enhanced, but rather the well chalked potions of holds appear to have been chipped off entirely.

This appears to be deliberately malicious behaviour targeting climbers and the only common link seems to be that all the hold that were chipped were well chalked. There have been previous complaints about excessive chalk use in the area, so it may point to another user who dislikes climbers using chalk. Either way it's hard to understand how anyone can justify this damage as a response to chalk use.

The BMC is in contact with the landowner and National Park ranger and we have expressed our concern about the situation and offered to help in any way we can. It seems unlikely that the person or persons responsible will ever surface, but if you notice any suspicious activity at either these crags or elsewhere in the Peak, please report it to either the BMC or National Park ranger service.

In the meantime it's worth emphasising that the chipped rock will be extremely fragile now that it's hard patina has been removed, so climbers should avoid using the holds for the timebeing to prevent further damage. General good practice including using minimal chalk and tickmarks, and brushing off any remaining with a soft brush once you're finished climbing should be considered essential here as it is elsewhere.

sounds like someone objecting to selfish and arrogant climbers who won't clean up natural areas after use - there's a lot of them about!

Some people clearly have too much time on their hands and take life far too seriously. Idiots.

Sounds like the f@©k you response from the angry idiots that there seems to be growing numbers of these days. Perhaps it's reflection on peoples feelings of helplesness in a failing society?

It's completely over the top whoever did it. Hopefully they've now mobed on and are tagetting their efforts at shoving the poo back up the anus of dogs who's owners don't clean up after them.

If it is a climber who is protesting about the use of chalk, then maybe if they read these posts, they would have the courtesy to explain the thinking behind the severe measures that they have taken.
If it's the more likely case of pure vandalism, then unfortunately it's something that sends to have spread from urban areas to the outdoor climbing areas. It would be very difficult to put a stop to this occurring again.

A climber destroying a route because other climbers haven't cleaned up after themselves makes no sense to me. It would be akin to me putting a hammer through my own cars dirty windows after my wife borrowing the car!

Take issue with the chalkers, not the route FFS!

To the idiot that posted :"sounds like someone objecting to selfish and arrogant climbers who won't clean up natural areas after use - there's a lot of them about! ". Chalk build up as opposed to attacking a geological formation with hammer and chisel. Or maybe it's just another comment from one of the internet trolls trying to wind people up.

no 13 it's very rude of you to call someone an idiot for expressing an opinion on why rock holds have been deliberately damaged. you sound like one of the climbers mentioned in comment 1 yourself!

Unfortunately vandalism like this does occur from time to time.

I always feel it might be prudent to report it, but not make a big fuss over it. If the culprits or other like minded onlookers realise they're getting a strong reaction, i feel incidents like this are more likely to be repeated.

Just a thought.
