At the BMC AGM on Saturday, Henry Folkard and Dave Bishop, two of the BMC Access Team’s best-known activists, received the second George Band Award, given to BMC volunteers who have made an exceptional contribution to the organisation’s work.

Rab Carrington leaves office praising volunteer effort

Rab Carrington left his post as President of the BMC on Saturday 28 April after a successful three-year term, praising the huge volunteer effort that goes into the organisation and the constant vigilance required to maintain access to our crags and hills. Members of the BMC elected Scott Titt as its new president along with two new Vice-Presidents, Kate Phillips and Mike Watson.

Climbers jeopardize access in Cheddar

We are now well into the summer climbing season in the Cheddar Gorge and as many climbers will know, some areas and routes are restricted during the summer season due to public safety concerns. With the Gorge walls being so steep and close to the road, the landowners - Cheddar Caves & Gorge, have been concerned for some time about loose rock and dropped climbing equipment hurting members of the public or cars on the road below.

Kinder 80 celebrations

Although Kinder is a peaceful place today, 80 years ago it was the scene of confrontation, beatings and social injustice. This month sees the 80th anniversary of the ground breaking Kinder Mass Trespass in 1932, and a whole week of celebrations are planned.
