The BMC is sad to announce the death of Nick Bond, a long-serving BMC volunteer, who passed away on Monday 10 July following a brave battle against lung cancer.

Nick, a member of the Rucksack Club, climbed throughout his life, having started as a student at Manchester Polytechnic (now MMU).  He travelled widely, typically making two climbing trips a year, to places as distant as Australia and America but most often Europe and UK, encompassing trad, sport and bouldering.

Nick’s dedicated support for the BMC began in the late 1990s when he was elected as area representative for the Lancashire and Cheshire Area (now the North West Area) on the BMC Management Committee (now National Council), on which he served until 2002; during this time he also occasionally sat on the BMC Executive Committee.

Around that time he also became an area representative on the Climbing Wall Committee, and in 2000 took on the role of chair of the committee, which he held until 2013.

Nick was also chair of the BMC North West Area from 2000 to 2003, did a year as secretary in 2009, and came back for another stint as chair in 2013 and 2014 when he was one of the driving forces behind the establishment of the very successful BMC WiltonFest, the annual celebration of climbing at the BMC-owned Wilton Quarries near Bolton. He also did a massive amount of work with Les Ainsworth editing the Lancashire 'Brick' guidebook scripts into a modern format and writing the histories.  He also has a photo on the back cover.

He started a second five-year term as a National Council representative for the North West Area in 2013 and recently supported the work of the BMC Guidebook Committee, initially on the Lancashire Rock guidebook, and more recently on the Peak Limestone series.

In his professional life he was a radiographer, working right up to his death. He was generous in his support of the biennial BMC Injury Prevention Symposium, giving presentations and also sourcing other presenters that he knew professionally.

He will be missed by the BMC for his enthusiastic support and also his insightful observations.  His friends and mates will miss his warm company and cheery banter.

He leaves two children, Tom and Lizzie, and partner Bev.
