Mont Blanc rockfall warning on Gouter route

Stop Press: we are receiving reports that there has been a large rockfall below the Gouter hut on the popular route up Mont Blanc.

As a result the 'Gouter' route on Mt Blanc is not advisable in view of the instability of this section of the route.

The rockfall occured on 24th August.

This is a rough translation of a postiing on the OHM website in Chamonix:

"There has been a large landslide in the middle of the afternoon in the le couloir du Goûter. The route is not advisable in view of the instability of this sector"

Le Dauphine, A local newspaper, has a good photo of the couloir looking very dry, and says the following"

"The extreme dryness the mountain has seen for several days requires the utmost vigilance of mountaineers."

Spanish climbers Josep Maria Esquirol and David Palmada made a spirited attempt to climb the centre of the rock scar on the west face of the Petit Dru, more or less along the line formerly taken by the American Direttissima.
