Sadly, Alan Blackshaw, past President of the BMC (1973-1976), died on Thursday 4 August 2011 at Raigmore hospital in Inverness

There was a huge turnout for Alan's funeral, held at the Cathedral Church of St Andrew Inverness on Friday 19 August, as people came from all corners of the country as well as from abroad to pay their respects.

The funeral was very much a celebration of Alan’s life with tributes and accounts of his life from Doug Scott, Derek Walker, Peter Cliff and two of his children: Sara and Alasdair. Alan's other two children, Elsie and Ruth, played the Fiddle & Cello.

Rather than buying flowers for the funeral the family asked that donations be made to the East Africa Crisis Appeal.  At the funeral there was a collection in aid of the Appeal. Those unable to attend the service but would like to donate, please either do so online here or through D. Chisolm & Sons, Huntly Street, Inverness, IV3 5HP.

After the service there was a friendly informal gathering at the family home in Newtonmore to remember and celebrate all that Alan had achieved - with Alan’s Lake Tahoe-inspired BBQ being put to good use making venison burgers, accompanied by plenty of salad, cheese, oatcakes and wine.

Many of Alan's friends and family attended both the funeral and the gathering afterwards and shared their memories of Alan pouring through a huge collection of photographs that people had generously sent to the family.

A small memorial service is also to be held in London in the Autumn. Further details will follow.
