Happy 60th anniversary Peak Park

Posted by Tina Gardner on 11/04/2011

You're invited to celebrate the Peak District National Park’s 60th anniversary by getting out and about in the beautiful countryside.

Sunday April 17 is the actual diamond anniversary date of the Peak District National Park which came into being in 1951. To commemorate the National Park Authority is inviting people to take part in a celebration weekend of events.

Chief executive Jim Dixon said: “Sixty years ago the Peak District became Britain’s first national park protecting the landscape for current and future generations to enjoy.

“Since then the area’s natural beauty and all it offers has inspired and transformed the lives of thousands of residents and millions of visitors.”

The National Park Authority works to safeguard and promote the Peak District’s special environment and ways of life and encourages people to make the most of the great outdoors.

Jim said: “National Parks are for everyone. We want people to join us in our 60th anniversary celebrations and enjoy the events being offered throughout the Peak District.

“Whether you take part in an organised event or go out under your own steam for a walk, bike ride, horse ride, climb or sail, the main thing is that everyone takes the opportunity to appreciate this much-loved landscape.”

The 60th anniversary celebration events include bird watching, walks with cake stops and cycling.
