As Everest season continues, another record has been broken: Apa Sherpa has summited for the 20th time.
Apa Sherpa - climbing leader of Eco Everest Expedition - broke his own world record and reached the summit at 08:34am on 22 May 2010. With him were many members of this year's Eco Everest Expedition.
The Eco Everest Expedition are organised by Asian Trekking and focus on climbing in an eco-sensitive manner, and field-testing different eco-sensitive methods to be adopted while climbing in the Himalaya. This year, the expedition brought nearly 5,000Kg of old garbage back down to base camp. It also brought down all the human waste produced by the expedition team. The expedition advocated for other expeditions to follow suit, supplying other expeditions on Everest with Restop Bags (toilet bags).
With three expeditions since 2008, Eco Everest has now brought down an impressive 12,000Kg kilos of previous expedition garbage.
In 2008 the Eco Everest Expedition team brought down 965 kilos of garbage, including 75 kilos of human waste from above base camp. In 2009 they brought down 6,000Kg of rubbish under the “Cash for Trash” program, which included 115 kilos of human waste produced during the expedition.Wreckage of an Italian Army helicopter was also recovered from the edge of the Khumbu Icefall (5,486m).
