Disability awareness training 2010

Wheelchair abseil
A programme of courses for disability awareness training in rock climbing has been arranged for 2010.

This one day course was originally put together by Don Mabbs over 10 years ago and was known as ‘Climbing for All’. Since then it has become increasingly popular.

Courses will take place mainly at mainstream climbing walls and will be put on by ‘Adventure for All’ (AFA) approved providers in association with Mountain Leader Training Association (MLTA). AFA is an umbrella body for specialist disability providers based in the UK.

Dates and Venues
12th February Bendrigg Trust, Kendal
12th March The Castle Climbing Centre, London
14th May Newcastle Climbing Centre
9th July Ratho, Edinburgh
10th September The Tower Climbing Centre, Leicestershire
15th October Undercover Rock, Bristol
12th November Climb Rochdale, Rochdale

Cost
£50 per person

All attendees will receive an MLTA certificate of attendance and a copy of the MLTE/BMC ‘Climbing for All’ handbook

You do not need to be a climbing instructor to attend because non-climbing personnel such as support facility managers, support workers & teachers can have a big impact on access to rock climbing for people with a disability. However, it will be necessary for people delivering the activities to have an in depth understanding of climbing.

Addendum
2010 will prove to be an exciting year in terms of disability development with the BMC Equity Steering Group gathering more momentum and the staging of the first BMC managed climbing competition for disabled people 25th April in Rochdale.
