The two-day courses based in the Cairngorms are delivered by Jonathan Preston IFMGA, and based at Ardenbeg Outdoor Centre in Grantown-on-Spey.
The Conville courses are aimed at those who have not done any sort of course in the winter mountains before, but are experienced summer hill walkers and climbers.
These courses are specially designed to give a sound introduction to the techniques needed for moving on snow and ice - both in Britain in winter and in the Alps. The course will include use of crampons and ice axes, belaying and rope work, avalanche assessment, navigation and other topics related to the winter mountains.
Heavily subsidised by the Jonathan Conville Memorial Trust (JCMT), the course costs just £70. This covers all food, accommodation, equipment, in-course transportation and professional instruction.
The courses are administered by Plas y Brenin, and students can apply online for the courses. The closing date for applications is 24 October.
Plas y Brenin also administer and deliver the JCMT Alpine Courses every summer in Chamonix. Applications for those three day courses open next spring.
Formerly, the BMC administered all JCMT courses. Even though this has now be taken over by Plas y Brenin, the BMC still make a financial contribution to the JCMT every year.
