Malham Cove in full glory.
Malham Cove is owned by Malham Parish Council and has a high level of legal protection due to its status as a Site of Special Scientific Interest. Therefore, any ‘work’ on the Cove requires a licence from Natural England and landowner consent.
"BMC Yorkshire Area volunteers Martin Christmas and Richard Hardicre and local climber Gareth Scott must be congratulated for presenting a good case and securing the agreement" said Guy Keating (BMC Access & Conservation Officer) "This is a really positive development for climbers and the BMC because the people in charge of a national landmark are satisfied that re-bolting does not present significant liability concerns or impact on the conservation features".
“I am really pleased with this result” said Martin Christmas, “Its been a real team effort, Head Office and area volunteers working together to achieve a really positive outcome for the Yorkshire area. We really appreciate the Parish Council helping us make the Cove a better place to climb”
Richard (and the Yorkshire Bolt Fund) will be coordinating the work and hope to crack on in the coming months - before the Cove’s resident peregrines return for their annual nesting attempt in Feb. Several volunteers have already agreed to help with the re-equipping, but if you would like to chip in please get in touch with Guy Keating at the BMC, email guy@thebmc.co.uk.
The BMC wishes to thank the Parish Council members and Natural England for supporting the work.
