The December meeting of the BMC National Council is always extremely busy. Besides the normal business that every National Council meeting has to get through, the December meeting reviews the work of all the BMC Specialist Committees and also starts to think ahead to the BMC AGM.
The first first part of the meeting is packed with really interesting information as the National Council reviews the work of each of the BMC Specialist Committees. This consists of reviewing the Terms of Reference of each committee to see if they are still valid and, secondly, of each committee reporting on the work they have achieved during the year and also setting out a forward plan of what they hope to achieve in the coming year.
National Council members also have the opportunity to raise questions with the Chairs of the specialist committees and the BMC officers that work with them. It really is worth reading the documentation that is presented at this meeting to gain an insight into what the BMC, and the vast number of BMC volunteers, do on behalf of us all. As one National Council member said "it's really inspiring to see what gets done quietly and efficiently, and without fuss, on our behalf. I think members would really appreciate knowing more about all this good work." To view the agreed terms of references, reports and forward plans of each BMC specialist committee please click here.
After a break, the second part of the meeting consisted of reports, including those from BMC Area representatives, constitutional and policy issues, as well a host of discussions on current issues. Rehan Siddiqui, Chair of the BMC Equity Steering Group. received the National Council's nomination for the BMC Vice-President position that will become vacant when Bill Renshaw's term comes to an end in April 2008. This will be put to the BMC AGM in April. On the policy front the revised Equity and Diversity policy and Action Plan was agreed.
The meeting was held at the excellent Plas y Brenin near Capel Curig in North Wales. It's a fantastically hospitable place in wonderful surroundings. It can be very difficult to get to for some of the very many volunteers that attend. The BMC would like to say a great big thank you all those that made the journey and generously gave their time to work on behalf of their fellow climbers, hill walkers and mountaineers. It really is valued and is very much appreciated.
