The International Federation of Sports Climbing (IFSC) came into being this weekend on 27 January. The BMC was one of 48 member federations from across the world to be represented at this momentous occasion in Frankfurt, Germany.
The formation of the new federation follows the decision taken at the UIAA general plenary meeting in Banff in October. The IFSC replaces the UIAA-ICC as the governing body for international competition climbing. Although the ICC now ceases to exist, the UIAA continues with all its other responsibilities.
Now the work starts for the new federation both on the day to day running of international competitions and also the longer term aspirations including gaining International Olympic Committee (IOC) recognition.
